This was not an official project for either the Vietnam men’s national team or the Vietnamese Football Federation and I was not affiliated with both whatsoever. This was just a personal and fun project for me when I started to learn more about football analysis.

In between 2020 and 2022, when Vietnam men’s national team qualified for the third round of the World Cup Asian Qualifiers, I wanted to build a dashboard that could tell a story about that historic achievement of the team. Having been inspired by Football Manager’s latest feature, the Data Hub, I dug deep to find Python packages and libraries that could help me build a dashboard, and I came across Streamlit, which is where the dashboard is still being hosted to this day.

Using raw event data from Opta that have been processed using Pandas and Numpy, the data were then visualised through Matplotlib and Mplsoccer, and the visualisations would be pushed onto the Streamlit dashboard. The dashboard was also able to map user inputs regarding which player they want to view the data of to that player’s Opta ID.

The dashboard also contains data from the AFF Cup 2020 tournament, where Vietnam also managed to win the title and added more to a highly successful period. As such, the data from that tournament were added to round off a memorable period for the national team.
