Throughout October 2024, I challenged myself to learn how to create a video game using any game engine, having been inspired by the words of Jason “Thor” Hall (aka PirateSoftware). Deciding between Unity and Unreal Engine was not an easy decision for me as each engine has its own pros and cons. Ultimately, due to the complexity of both engines, I decided to go with a more lightweight engine in Godot Engine. For 3D modelling, Blender was an easy choice as it is one of the most popular modelling softwares for game development.
Another inspiration for the game was one of my favourite TV shows of all time, Gravity Falls (created by Alex Hirsch), which took problem solving and solving codes to another level. The theme for the game was to be an escape room-esque game where the player found themselves lost in a forest, only to stumble upon a mansion in the middle of the woods. From there, the player has to solve puzzles and quests scattered throughout the mansion to find out about the story behind the family who once lived in the mansion.
While I got around to create the woods, I have not been able to fully finish the game due to, once again, time constraints. However, that 14 days spent on creating 3D model of a tree and learning how to create a first-person point of view were very interesting and enjoyable. I do intend to come back to this project at some point in the future with, hopefully, more experience on hand and turn the current semi-working demo into a fully-fetched game.
